This is our story

75+ years in the making

From wartime resilience to royal receptions, The Phoenicia Malta has stood witness to Malta’s most defining moments.

Our rich heritage

  • 1930s

Lady Margaret Strickland had a vision for a new kind of landmark in Malta. Something refined, welcoming, and built to last.

It was Scottish architect William Binnie, in the early 1930s, who brought the country’s first five-star hotel to life in sweeping curves of local stone.

  • 1939

Before the first guest could arrive, war broke out. RAF crews took over the site. Bombs fell. Damage was done. But the foundations held, and the promise of something remarkable remained intact.

  • 1947

The Phoenicia Malta, at long last, opened to great fanfare – a symbol of postwar pride and modern Maltese hospitality.

The Grand Ballroom quickly became the island’s most elegant gathering place, where Princess Elizabeth danced as a newlywed in 1949.

  • 1966

The hotel was acquired by Charles Forte, ushering in a new era of style and international stature. One of Malta’s first swimming pools, now the Bastion Pool, was carved into the ancient city walls.

  • 2005

Elizabeth Windsor returned, now as Queen Elizabeth II, to host a state reception. Just one of countless historic moments that unfolded within these walls.

  • 2016

In 2016, The Phoenicia joined the ranks of The Leading Hotels of the World – a mark of rare excellence that validated decades of unceasing dedication.

  • 2017

After completing a meticulous €15 million restoration, the hotel reopened with its art deco soul beautifully intact, from the marble floors to the light-filled Rotunda.

  • 2020

The curtains rise on The Phoenicia Spa & Wellness, an extensive 1,200 sqm facility spanning two floors, with a key feature being the integration of a 16th century fortification wall in the main spa area.

  • 2025

Today, guests can wander through 7.5 acres of historic gardens, trace wartime tunnels beneath their feet, and write their own chapters in The Phoenicia Malta story.
