Malta’s Independence Day: A Day of Reflection, Pride and Celebration

September 17, 2025

On 21st September 1964, Malta took a defining step in its long, layered history by gaining independence from the United Kingdom. After centuries under a succession of powers including the Phoenicians, Romans, Arabs, the Knights of St John and the French, Malta finally became a self-governing nation under the Malta Independence Act. The new constitution formalised Maltese and English as official languages, adopted national symbols, and laid the foundations for the modern Maltese state. Ten years later, in 1974, Malta declared itself a republic, further cementing its sovereignty.

How Malta Celebrates Independence Day

Independence Day, or Jum l-Indipendenza, is one of Malta’s most cherished national holidays. The day is observed with a mixture of solemnity and festivity. Early in the day, there is often a celebratory mass in Valletta, uniting locals and visitors alike in reflection. This is followed by a flower-laying ceremony at the Independence Monument in Floriana, attended by the President, Prime Minister and other dignitaries, as a tribute to those who campaigned for Malta’s freedom.

As the day unfolds, cultural events and concerts take place across the islands. Orchestral performances, folk music, traditional għana and communal gatherings create a vibrant atmosphere. Streets and squares are dressed in red and white, with flags and lighting adding to the sense of pride. Families may gather for festive meals or enjoy the work of talented Maltese chefs at one of the many local restaurants. As dusk falls, fireworks or large concerts light up the skies, particularly in and around Valletta and Floriana, drawing crowds together beneath the stars.
